What is timp.msu?
timp.msu is an original video game music soundtrack written by me, an ALTTPR community member named timp (best known for creating, co-hosting, and editing the Go Mode Podcast) meant for use with A Link to the Past Randomizer seed downloads.
timp.msu will always be free and you’ll never receive a copyright strike while using it. All I ask is that you mention me as the composer if anyone happens to ask, perhaps by setting up a chat command before starting your seed.
How can I use timp.msu for an ALTTPR seed?
The zip file above is formatted as a standard MSU-1 folder. For instructions on how to utilize MSU-1 packs, see qwertymodo’s “MSU1 Getting Started Guide“. Here’s the quick version:
- Download the .zip file above.
- Extract the files to a new folder called “timp.msu”
- Generate/download a seed from alttpr.com.
- Save the patched ROM file in your newly created timp.msu folder (or move it there from your Downloads folder)
- Rename the ROM file from its original file name to “timp” instead.
- Open the ROM. timp.msu tracks should now be heard instead of the original ALTTP soundtrack.
Is there any way to hear it without playing the game it goes with?
The files in the .zip folder above are in a somewhat obscure audio format known as PCM, but there are music players capable of playing back PCM files you could use to listen to the tracks outside of a Rando seed. The free program Foobar plus the PCM extension is one recommendation for this method.
There are future plans to release these tracks as an EP on Spotify (among other potential platforms), so check back in February/March of 2022 for updates on that front!
What has possessed you to do this, timp?
Ever since I was a young boy waking up early to listen to Street Fighter II’s Sound Test on the Options screen for hours on end, I’ve wanted to be a video game composer. I have a Bachelor’s in Music Composition, and while I used to be a full-time musician, my career has since moved in a different direction (which is totally okay!) And while I did find some success writing for live scholastic ensembles as a full-time composer, I have never had the opportunity to write for a video game. But now, my love of the game ALTTPR combined with how easy it is to switch out its soundtrack via MSU-1 inspired me to finally make some moves and write & self-publish a full video game soundtrack!
I also wanted to give ALTTPR a soundtrack that was truly crafted for the ALTTPR experience. Right now, the normal LTTP soundtrack doesn’t account for the game being played the way it is when you randomize it. You end up spending a lot more time in certain areas than others, meaning whole songs from the vanilla soundtrack are never heard, and relatively short songs on the original vanilla soundtrack are heard way more than was ever intended. In writing this soundtrack, I generally made the songs you hear more often longer.

Known Issues / Planned Tweaks
The following will be addressed before the release of V2:
- Ganon boss battle theme is a bit quiet and the loop does not work properly
- Real trumpets and saxes will be recorded and used for horn parts in The Gauntlet
